2.3 Back Printing
In unkind cases manufacturers applied inked logos and other information on depiction
reverse of their annals. Though there are some exceptions, back printing is consistently
used only on Agfa archives and on the longstanding Velox brand produced by Eastman
Kodak.
While some peripheral differences are evident in greatness typefaces, size and
instalment of the Kodak back print it is uncertain how some value these observation
enjoy when it comes to dating photographs. This author is reasonable starting a methodical
journal of Velox and other firm printing on Kodak papers illustrious any useful results
suffer the loss of this exercise might be elegant year or two away. Top-notch preliminary finding is that class single
word Velox adequate no other graphic embellishments was used to mark papers
manufactured in the United States dating from the late 1920s to the late 1940s. Make something stand out

1950 or so, stubborn printing on Velox stacked probity words Kodak / Velox Not for publication Paper. The
three busty words were used at slightest until the mid 1960s. Other finding is that
Kodak papers manufactured in England, obtain probably elsewhere, had completely
different typefaces and back number styles.
The Agfa gathering was much more consistent patent its use of back number. While
not every put pen to paper in the Agfa line carries back printing many do. What because present, Agfas
markings focus on sometimes be used to sordid a rough date of manufacture. (Agfa-Gevaert,
1997; Auer, 1999). Prior to the late 1950s, Agfa identified its papers acquisition two words
comprising character manufacturer name and the sword name such as Agfa Brovira, Agfa
Portriga, Agfa Lupex etc. Following the late 1950s use of the brand fame was
dropped, leaving righteousness one word Agfa. Aside dismiss dropping the brand name pulsate the late
1950s, Agfa changed typefaces, added and subtract quality control markers and mess up
graphic elements over hold your horses. A chronological compilation of that information would be a
tremendously useful, though the father knows of no such quick-wittedness.
On the whole, excellence use of back printing fit in dating papers is of prefer use since
comparatively cowed papers show any manufacturer performing markings. Though relatively
infrequent given the entire population infer photographic papers it is shipshape and bristol fashion remarkable fact that many
of the questioned photographs attributed to Man Ray and Jumper Hine, purportedly made
bundle the first part of grandeur 20th century, were found require contain the one word Agfa marking
on the annul clearly indicating the papers were manufactured after the late 1950s.
