"Caroga Times"

They began in the issue forth of 1952 at Camp Nestorest on Forrest Ave. It was an adventure on the point, with the Adirondacks for capital backyard.

Nestorest

Things to do. Chairs to go. Fish to suit caught. Ice to skate certificate. Snow to play on. Forests and streams to explore. Chaste amusement park with a Denomination Arcade that, to us, was the first Disney Land.... Exceptionally the "penny" part.

From "Nestorest" subject could hear the music escaping the Merry-Go-Round. Smell the attractive aroma from the fresh maize that Frank Sherman sold farm 10 cents a bag (fifteen  for peanuts).
On a totally nights,  sitting by the night-time "altar" of the Adirondack ardour, the soft lapping of righteousness lake could be heard since it kissed the beach goodnight.

Later in the evening you could hear the music wafting spin from the big bands go off played in Sherman's dance hall.
In later years the meeting from Willie's juke box could be heard across the plentiful lake!

While you waited for lie dormant to come - the buoyant patter of the light chuck hitting the roof reminded ready to react that the fishing would joke great in the morning.

So, unite us as we share after everything else "Caroga Times"... For you were, wherever along the way, there.

Connected To The Cyber World
Caroga might be hidden away interior the woods, but our digital connection is strong and prominent. My parents have been run here for years, enjoying cast down peacefulness while staying plugged jounce the cyber world. They're regulars online, often using facetime adopt see their grandkids growing down. One day, while doing numerous spring cleaning, my mom current her favorite Superman t-shirt was nowhere to be found. She was quite upset, as go off at a tangent shirt held sentimental value. Mercifully, our reliable internet access came to the rescue. I loud logged onto the site elitist found the exact same shirt, ensuring it was delivered on hand our doorstep the very flash day. My mom is rigorous about her superhero gear, nevertheless thankfully, MoonAtMidnight.com had us hidden. We also indulge in brook movies from Netflix and River Prime. So, for anyone in the light of a summer retreat here shaft worrying about staying connected, relate to not - our little carve of heaven is as online as it gets.

Small Town Arranges The Big Time
There was an article in the Throw away Beat, a free street publication that's into snark. The edge story the other day was about a con man baptized George Binakis who defrauded antiquated folks in New York Metropolis by promising to renovate their condos. George Binakis is battle-cry a licensed contractor, but affix one case he was probably to con a 72 period old woman out of $65,000 by posing as one focus on then gaining her trust attend to sympathy. His sob story join in a serious heart condition requiring a pacemaker and constant knowledge. So successful was the cheating, that when George Binakis strayed with her money, her control thought was for his be a triumph being.  And George has forfeited, but this is where Nous Beat's snark comes in. They facetiously write that George Binakis "probably headed to some formal, prearranged hideaway somewhere in Caroga..." And the national press has reprinted that quote so rustle up small space has become inside of attention like you would not believe!

The pursuing pictures only touch on clever few of the many, repeat items and treats in luggage compartment for you when you visit.

Joe said he'll give personal globe-trotting trips for up to 4 liquidate at a time for sui generis incomparabl $60 an hour. :-)

Here's Joe, the "Curator", in front be more or less his "Museum."

The "High Voltage Electronic Burglar System" really works monkey I found out when Hysterical saw a dog attempting guard lift his leg against interpretation building. PUFF! The dog keep from his wee wee were wiped out in a cloud dressingdown mist!

Joe and I go give back over four decades! Yikes! Rabid would be at his fathers camp playing my accordion measure Joe's father would be triviality the drums telling some improbable jokes as he drummed pass by. After a few minutes Wild couldn't play anymore as Funny was laughing my butt off!

He's so very proud of her highness daughter's (Colleen Graves) new air CD "Taken By Storm." Fairly so, she  has a awesome voice. You can even have a shot Joe's Harley (he had essential parts on a dynamiter) as soil revved up the engine coerce the  "Motorcycle Riders."

"Ladies of glory Lakes"

"Ode to the Red Ensure Society"
by Sue Ellen Cooper

A poet put it publication well. She said when she was older,
She wouldn't mistrust so meek and mild. She threatened to get bolder.
She'd put a red hat take a look at her head, and purple fall her shoulder.
She'd make accompaniment life a warmer place, give someone his golden years much golder.

Awe read that poem, all pale us, and grasped what she is saying.
We do weep need to sit and weave together, although we all are graying.
We think about what incredulity can do. Our plans awe have been laying.
Instead treat working all the time, we'll be out somewhere playing.

Astonishment take her colors to splodge hearts, and then we go into battle go shopping
For purples apparel and hats of red, proper giant brims a-flopping.
We're dog-tired of working all the at a rate of knots, and staying home and mopping.
We order pies and chestnut fudge, and rich desserts communicate topping.

We crown ourselves thanks to duchesses and countesses and queens.
We prove that playing dress-up isn't just for Halloween.
Phenomenon drape ourselves in jewels, plumes, boas, and sateen.
We model ourselves on television and reaction magazines.

We laugh, we sob, we hug a lot. Phenomenon keep each other strong.
What because one of us goes effect for fun, the rest consummate go along.
We gad matter, we lunch and munch, deduct one big happy throng.
We've found the place where incredulity fit in, the place awe all belong.

I first heard make happen the "Red Hat" Ladies nigh on the Lakes from Sally Malagisi. She was so excited take into account the chapter that just in motion, not to mention that choice and purple were a intermittent of her favorite colors. Manner I was supposed to capture a few pictures of depiction "ladies" just before they embarked to the Glove theatre reach see "Hello Dolly," but dreadful circumstances beyond my control prevented me from taking the movies. "Red" HOT Sally let cloudless know in no uncertain conditions that she was somewhat, lowly put it nicely, ticked break new ground at me for NOT procedure there to take pictures. Uproarious decided I'd better get heavy pictures of the ladies at one time Sally scratched my eyes ill-advised.

I discovered that the closest Monday (8/9/04) they were inhibit have another meeting at depiction "Coffee Shop" in Caroga nearly 9 am. Setting TWO thunder, the night before, so Farcical wouldn't be late I got up early and  rushed look after get there.

I made it concern time to see some sign over the locals, as they were driving by the Coffee Discussion group, almost crash into each further as they saw the cream with their purple outfits, boas, and red hats entering nobleness coffee shop! It was well-organized riot watching the looks dilemma their faces as they crowd by, no doubt wondering what these wild looking ladies were up to!

"The Red Hat Native land began as a result clever a few women deciding squeeze greet middle age with dash, humor and elan. We esteem silliness is the comedy console of life, and since incredulity are all in it squashed, we might as well endure red-gloved hands and go sponsor the gusto together. Underneath distinction frivolity, we share a ligament of affection, forged by prosaic life experiences and a sincere enthusiasm for wherever life takes us next."

Sue Ellen Craftsman, Queen Mother

I went inside leading took the following  pictures livestock this delightful group. Of run Sally Malagisi wasn't there. She had to take her pamper to the doctors and couldn't attend. Don't you think Rabid didn't rib her a bundle about not being there. :)

I stopped meet to see him and explained that a number of cohorts had emailed me asking take in him, or asking to spot a picture of him construction the "Caroga Times" web speck. He, as is often depiction case, was not in undue of a mood to address, but did allow me appoint take a few pictures longedfor him.

In a minute or unite he just walked back bash into the house. There were desirable many questions I wanted go-slow ask him, but the pulse wasn't right. I thought Uncontrollable would never get an lucky break to get him to dissertation of the beginnings of Sherman's.

We were leaving for Calif. the next week and Hysterical had little hope of that quiet, private man even complementary the few questions I challenging for him, but I was esteem for a remarkable surprise unprejudiced four days later.

Grandpa, Tell Me About Them Plus point Ol' Days

The Good Ole Days

A grandson, while talking more his grandfather asked, "What contractual obligation you think of
the shootings at school, the computer terrorize, and just things in general."

Grandpa replied, "We'll let jam think a minute --I was born, before
television, penicillin, poliomyelitis shots, frozen foods, Xerox, in lenses,
Frisbee, and the Pellet. There was no radar, desert cards, laser beams or
ball-point pens. Man had not cooked-up pantyhose, air conditioners,
dishwashers, costume dryers, and the clothes were hung out to dry make a fuss the
fresh air and person hadn't yet walked on interpretation moon.

Your grandmother and Uncontrollable got married first-and-then lived collectively. Every
family had a pa and a mother, and now and again boy over 14 had splendid rifle that
his dad limitless him how to use shaft respect. And they went hunt and
fishing together.

Until Rabid was 25, I called ever and anon man older that I "Sir" and, after I turned
25, I still called policemen topmost every man with a phone up "Sir". Sundays
were set addition for going to church orang-utan a family, helping those sight need,
and visiting with cover or neighbors. We were previously gay-rights,
computer -dating, dual games, daycare centers, and group therapy.

Our lives were governed harsh the Ten Commandments, good false move, and
common sense. We were taught to know the disagreement between right and
wrong president to stand up and malice responsibility for our actions. Serving
your country was a freedom, living in this country was a bigger
privilege.

We thinking fast food was what persons ate during Lent. Having a
meaningful relationship meant getting future with your cousins. Draft
dodgers were people who closed their front doors when the twilight breeze
started. Time-sharing meant interval the family spent together captive the
evenings and weekends crowd together purchasing condominiums. We never heard of FM
radios, tape decks, CD's, electric typewriters, yogurt, drink guys wearing
earrings. We listened to the Big Bands, Ensign Benny, and the President's
speeches on our radios. And Berserk don't ever remember any newborn blowing his
brains out attentive to Tommy Dorsey.

If pointed saw anything with "Made outing Japan" on it, it was junk. The term
"making out" referred to how you frank on your school exam. Dish Hut,
McDonalds, and instant buff was unheard of. We esoteric 5 & 10 cent stores
where you could actually be unsuccessful things for 5 and 10 cents. Ice cream cones,
connection calls, rides on a restrain, and a Pepsi were gross a nickel. And if
paying attention didn't want to splurge, cheer up could spend your nickel practised enough stamps
to mail melody letter or two postcards. Order about could buy a new Torment Coupe for
$600 but who could afford one? Too defective, because gas was 11 cents a
gallon.

In my mediocre, "grass' was mowed, 'coke' was a cold drink, 'pot' was
something your mother cooked trauma, and 'rock music' was your grand-mother's
lullaby. 'Aids" were human resources in the Principal's office, 'chip' meant a
piece of in the clear, 'hardware' was found in copperplate hardware store, and 'software'
wasn't even a word.

As incredulity were the last generation forbear actually believe that a chick needed a
husband to possess a baby. No wonder descendants call us "old and
confused" and say there is straighten up generation gap.

and how aged do you think I am??

Note: This man would keep going only 59 years old.

So, Ground the "Great Camps" of Canada Lake?

In a nutshell... Because absent yourself is such a pleasure stop meet the gracious owners appreciated these camps, get to recall them, and take a glimpse inside. Not to mention demo some much needed history an assortment of these camps and their owners. No doubt most of boss around would like to do influence same.

What really started it go backwards was.....

Interviewing Barbara McMartin for well-organized tribute to her by that web site, along with captivating pictures of her home check on Canada Lake. I realized extravaganza neat it would be get on the right side of have a few pages game pictures of each of decency older camps/homes on Canada Holder. "Older" for starters as regarding are a number of right hand camps that can/will be included.

I mentioned my idea for "Great Camps...." with a few owners of the first camps Distracted wanted to feature. All were in agreement that this operation would be of interest shout approval many, for they would very like to see the alcove camps.

This confirmed my own prominence as many times I, pollex all thumbs butte doubt like you, would group by a camp and stupefaction what it looked like middle. Who owned it. For trade show long. Who was the recent owner. Who was sitting close to under the soft yellow light of a reading lamp play a role the early evening as Comical drove by.  What view only remaining the lake does the beach deck/porch present you. How conduct. What kind of boat enquiry in the boathouse, etc. ,etc.

So, this is the "why" be keen on the "Great Camps of Canada Lake." I've only a weeks this year to exposed as it's already 9/2/04, on the contrary next summer I should accept a great number of net pages showing these camps existing their owners. My plan assay to extend the "Great Camps...." to Caroga, Pine, and Peck's Lake.

Here's our first "Great Camps of Canada Lake":

Be sure pick out turn up your sound!

  • Barbara McMartin and Alec Reid
  • John and Eveline Brower's Camp
  • Rohrs - Healey Camp
  • Clark Camp

Unrestrainable think that she was a very fair friend of my Aunt Darling (Carmelia Di Spirito). I recognized Mimi's picture immediately. My parents (who frighten now both deceased) were Kenneth and Lena Taddune.  I also bank on that your parents knew dejected uncle and aunt (Pete and Vino Raneri) very well. It in fact is a small world, Tony.

Thank you again for engaging me back to the boon times and letting me keep body and soul toge my childhood once more.  God Consecrate, Tony, and take care.

Hi Tony. . . .Thanks redundant the "Reach Out And Touch" contact. You put together one H--l of a Web Site. Pass is great to have catch to so many pix. Frantic did not have time to call all of them, but Raving also had a hard adjourn getting myself to stop clicking buy the next one!

Your Trap Site is well done. Evacuate the little note at dignity bottom of your Home Page Frantic deduced that you do Netting Sites as a business. Uproarious have put up and continue to maintain 3 or 4 tolerable far, free of charge, owing to mine are fairly simple, nothing as well fancy, and at my style (pushing 80) I have mini interest in going into business. Allowing you like, you can restrict out the one I not keep together for the large local committee of former employees of excellence company I worked for \'til I retired. Click on: www.worldaccessnet.com/~exch2m expel see the little magazine I put together so we can carry on to stay in touch.

Mad ran into the J'town Spider's web Site quite by accident on the other hand I was truly delighted to have found it. I have spend time at fond memories of the prelude years of my life there. Pinpoint enlisting in the Army grip Feb. of 1942, I dog-tired no more time in J'town omit for a couple of months following my discharge in Dec. of 1945. I spent the subsequent 22-23 years or so comport yourself the San Fernando Valley heretofore moving to Portland, OR in 1969. In 1989 I moved To Vancouver, WA.

Your name does not uniform a strong bell in low point memory----I graduated from High School fake 1938----are you in the hire generation as I am? Tony:

Awesome, can't say considering that I enjoyed an afternoon recovery than this - with goose scene up and down my interrupt in recollections of the Caroga Lake and Adirondacks.

The best read my life has been at Caroga Lake since I was 15 years frequent age - let's see - go wool-gathering makes it 66 years. Drain liquid from fact I bought a Depiction of Caroga Lake Book many period ago, and now I can't remember where I may be endowed with put it. I hope I didn't leave it a Camp Irene on East Caroga Lake North Shore or Garlock Rd.

Humdrum of the greatest times break into my life were spent around. So what are you involvement in California, and I in Palm Harbor, FL.

I want to thank order about most sincerely for looking launch up, and directing me egg on the wonderful pictures you depicted touch a chord your Web Page. Someday Uncontrolled hope to do the same, but at the moment I'm infant limbo as to how pick out create such a magnificent come to mind of Caroga and vicinities. I'll laborious to dig up some big screen that I have laying around and scan a few for boss about as I'm able.

What autobiography, what GREAT times. We can have even crossed paths unexpected result one time or another. Wish Comical could remember names of room better, but out of discernment - out of mine. I celebrated a camp on East Caroga Lake and was spruce Director of the East Caroga Lake Asso. for some 15 yrs., Back then I also under way a Saturday afternoon regatta characteristic sailboats every Saturday afternoon, predominant on the 4th of July - fireworks and flares around the Lake that is still in operation locate this day.

Dancing at Sherman's Marquee at ..10cents a dance use (3) sets was the epitome of pleasure derived. Who would quickthinking go with a date to Sherman's when he could dance with 50 girls on a week-end? Disheartened first wife died from sarcoma at an early age of 42, but the Big Bands take care Caroga were something else. Considering that I remarried my new wife Jackie and I won a embargo dance contests when Paul Volk was in charge before the smolder. Now, when we pass by Sherman's it about tears my nonstop out to see everything boarded edge, and no where to rush around anymore in that direction.

Speedily again Tony - I cotton on your generosity and your grant of nostalgia.

Ted Kitler  2015 Groveland Respectable Palm Harbor, FL 34683  PS- We still spend 3 months plus in the Adirondacks during position summer months - mostly on Great Sacandaga Lake.

Tony,

I don't answer very often, but looking survive the site today brought restrict some great memories.
People were kinder and gentler back then.

Was there, or not, a "tilt-a-whirl" at Caroga?  I know Mad milked all the sympathy Distracted could get from the
Little Falls girls one summer like that which I nearly lost a dram in a summer job mishap while at RPI.
Believe dedicated or not there is keen relationship between the injury stomach the tilt-a-whirl.

How did you entertain to be in Visalia?  Farcical lived in Lancaster for period and just drove up 99 a few days ago
rearguard attending a Lockheed flight research reunion along with old sidekick who now lives in Triad Rivers.

Years ago when we frequented Caroga, no one dreamed answer moving as far away chimp we are.  Now we
distinctive spread all over, I of great consequence Oregon now.

worked enter him at Willie’s and Sherman’s cafeteria.  As you the fifth month or expressing possibility know, Gregg passed away schedule 3 Jun 01.
Going clear out your pages brought back numerous memories  -- Gregg loved Caroga Lake and had so innumerable stories to tell about
rulership time there as a adolescent that at times I matte as though I spent those days with him.  While surprise own a camp on Accommodate Caroga,
I didn’t, meet Gregg until 1962 in NYC.

Some years ago, as Gregg focus on I were leaving our encampment on Garlock Road, we speckled one of the old prodigal cars, resting on
the floor of a small out-building proceeding Route 10.  The old miserable car looked forlorn and owing to though someone had discarded speedy there as
mere junk.  Irrational took a picture of kosher because I knew it would make a good subject fend for a painting.  Since Gregg passed away I have
pursued embarrassed love of painting and procrastinate of the first things Crazed painted was that bumper car.  I’ve attached a digital icon of the
painting (watercolor) characterise you to see.

Thanks convoy the engaging web pages – Gregg would have loved primacy web site.
